Best Transportation for NYC Events | IONA Sprinter

Quick Answer: What's the Best Transportation for NYC Events?

For groups of five or more, booking one chauffeured vehicle is often the simplest way to get to and from an NYC event. Everyone travels together, the return pickup can be planned before the event starts, and nobody in the group has to drive. As a general guide:

  • Sedan: 1–3 passengers
  • Luxury SUV: 5–7 passengers
  • Sprinter van (executive 8–10 seat configuration): 8–10 passengers
  • Sprinter van: 11–14 passengers
  • Larger groups: Multiple vehicles coordinated under one booking

The best choice also depends on the venue. A pickup plan that works at Madison Square Garden may not work at UBS Arena or MetLife Stadium.

Iona Sprinter is a Brooklyn-based chauffeured transportation company serving Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Long Island and New Jersey with Mercedes Sprinter vans, luxury SUVs and sedans. All vehicles are licensed by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC), which is a legal requirement for any pre-arranged for-hire vehicle picking up in New York City.

Why Group Transportation Gets Complicated After an NYC Event

Getting to an event is usually the easy part. Getting everyone home at the same time can be harder.

After a concert, game or convention, large crowds leave at once. Madison Square Garden holds 19,812 for basketball, Barclays Center seats 17,553 for basketball (up to 19,000 for concerts), UBS Arena about 17,250 for hockey, and MetLife Stadium more than 82,000. When that many people exit at the same moment, rideshare pickup areas become congested, subway platforms fill up, and groups that arrived separately may have trouble finding each other.

For groups, the main advantage of booking transportation in advance is having one vehicle, one pickup plan and one point of coordination.

That matters even more when your group has coats, luggage, shopping bags, costumes or event merchandise.

Your Main Transportation Options for NYC Events

Subway

The subway is often a practical choice for individuals and smaller groups traveling light. Many major NYC venues are close to subway stations: Penn Station sits directly under MSG, Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center serves Barclays, and the 7 train reaches 34 St–Hudson Yards near the Javits Center.

The challenge for larger groups is coordination. Everyone needs to stay together, and there is no dedicated vehicle waiting when the event ends.

Rideshare

Rideshare can work well for smaller groups, particularly for the trip to the venue.

For larger groups, however, you may need several vehicles. That can mean different pickup times, different drivers and a more complicated return trip when thousands of people are requesting rides at the same time. At MetLife Stadium, the venue itself warns that post-event rideshare waits can exceed two hours when crowds are large.

Driving and Parking

Driving keeps your group together, but it puts parking and traffic on one person.

Someone has to drive, find parking, pay for parking and make sure everyone gets back to the vehicle after the event. Venue traffic can also make the trip home considerably slower — the roads around the Meadowlands complex back up heavily after MetLife events.

Chauffeured Transportation

A chauffeured vehicle gives your group a single planned ride to and from the event.

You can arrange the pickup location in advance, keep everyone together and avoid assigning one person to drive. For larger groups, this is often the most convenient option. In NYC, chauffeured vehicles must be booked in advance (see the TLC rules below).

Which Vehicle Is Right for Your Group?

Choose based on passenger count first, then consider luggage, equipment and how much space your group wants.

VehicleTypical capacityBest for
BMW 7 Series Sedan1–3Couples and small groups
Cadillac Escalade SUV5–7Families and small friend groups
Mercedes Sprinter Van (8–10 seat configuration)8–10Mid-size groups wanting more room per seat
Mercedes Sprinter Van11–14Friend groups, families and event groups
Executive Sprinter11–14Groups wanting additional comfort and interior space
Multiple vehicles15+Larger groups traveling on the same itinerary

If you're between vehicle sizes, consider what everyone will be carrying. A group with several suitcases, equipment bags or large shopping bags may need more space than its passenger count suggests.

NYC Event Transportation by Venue

The most important part of group transportation is not simply choosing a vehicle. It's deciding where everyone will meet after the event, down to the exact street corner.

Venue layouts, traffic patterns and post-event crowds vary considerably, so your pickup plan should be specific to the venue. The pickup points below are based on our dispatch experience. Street closures and traffic arrangements can change from event to event, so always confirm the current plan with your dispatcher before game day or show night.

Madison Square Garden

Location: 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001 Neighborhood: Midtown Manhattan Capacity: 19,812 (basketball)

Madison Square Garden sits directly above Penn Station. When a Knicks game, Rangers game or major concert ends, the venue empties into one of the busiest transit hubs in the country.

Recommended pickup plan:

  • Best pickup corner: 8th Avenue & W 31st Street, on the west side of the Penn Station block, across from the Farley Building and Moynihan Train Hall. The 7th Avenue front of MSG is heavily congested at show end and often restricted, so side streets and the 8th Avenue side usually move faster.
  • Backup spot: W 30th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, a quieter block where a van can pull in.
  • Timing strategy: Either leave your seats 2–3 minutes before the final song or whistle, or plan to wait about 20 minutes inside while the first wave clears. Your chauffeur stages on a nearby block and pulls in when the group is at the corner.
  • Route notes: New Jersey-bound groups head to the Lincoln Tunnel; Queens and Long Island groups use the Queens–Midtown Tunnel; Brooklyn groups typically take the Manhattan Bridge via Canal Street or the Brooklyn Bridge.

In our dispatch experience, the groups that struggle at MSG are the ones trying to coordinate on the 7th Avenue sidewalk in front of the arena. The groups that meet on 8th Avenue are usually on their way before most rideshare requests have matched.

Barclays Center

Location: 620 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217 Area: Downtown Brooklyn / Prospect Heights Capacity: 17,553 (basketball), up to 19,000 (concerts)

Barclays Center sits where Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues meet, two of Brooklyn's busiest corridors, with several subway lines and the LIRR Atlantic Terminal within a block.

Recommended pickup plan:

  • Best pickup corner: Dean Street & 6th Avenue, on the north side of the arena. Dean Street is quieter than the Flatbush/Atlantic intersection, which locks up after events.
  • Backup spot: Vanderbilt Avenue & Atlantic Avenue, a few blocks east of the arena, with less pedestrian traffic.
  • Avoid: The plaza at Flatbush and Atlantic immediately after the event. Pedestrian volume is at its peak there and curbside stops are often restricted.
  • Timing strategy: The plaza crowd thins noticeably within 20–30 minutes. If your group is heading to dinner in Prospect Heights or Park Slope anyway, leaving the arena a little later makes the whole trip smoother.
  • Route notes: Manhattan-bound groups cross via the Manhattan Bridge (Flatbush Avenue Extension) or the Brooklyn Bridge; Queens groups take the BQE; Staten Island groups head for the Verrazzano via the Belt Parkway or Gowanus Expressway.

A single Sprinter leaving from Dean Street can be well on its way to Manhattan or Queens while a group splitting into three separate rideshares is still waiting for drivers.

See our guide to Barclays Center concert and game transportation.

UBS Arena

Location: 2400 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, NY 11003 Area: Belmont Park / Nassau County border Capacity: About 17,250 (hockey)

UBS Arena is different from a typical Manhattan venue. It sits on Belmont Park property rather than city blocks, so event traffic and designated pickup areas play a much larger role. There is no "just meet on the corner" option. Your group needs a plan inside a parking-lot environment.

Recommended pickup plan:

  • Where to meet: Rideshare, taxi and black-car pickups use the arena's designated ride area on the north side of the arena, accessed only via Cross Island Parkway Exit 26D and Green Road. Before entering the arena, agree on a specific lot section or landmark. "Row 4 near the shuttle stop" beats "we'll find you."
  • If your vehicle is staging as a limo or oversized vehicle: Limos, buses and Sprinters can't simply occupy lined parking spaces at UBS. Arrangements are made in advance — vehicles enter at Gate 5 Road off Hempstead Turnpike, drop guests in the Silver C lot, then proceed to the designated oversized-vehicle area. If you're booking a Sprinter for a UBS event, coordinate this with your provider at least 72 hours before the event.
  • Timing strategy: Departures funnel onto Hempstead Turnpike, and the first 20 minutes are the worst. Groups that wait 15–20 minutes after the event ends often avoid the heaviest traffic on the way out.
  • Transit alternative: The LIRR serves Elmont–UBS Arena station, about a 10–15 minute walk from the arena (or a short free shuttle ride), with direct service from Grand Central Madison and connections at Jamaica. It's a useful backup if part of your group is coming from Manhattan.
  • Route notes: Queens and Brooklyn groups typically return via the Cross Island Parkway and Belt Parkway or the LIE, routes that are generally toll-free. Bronx and Westchester groups cross the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge (MTA toll).

Groups coming from New York City usually prefer one direct chauffeured ride over coordinating several transit connections or multiple cars, especially late at night.

Make sure everyone saves the chauffeur's contact information and the exact meeting point before entering the arena. Cell service can slow down when thousands of people use their phones at the same time.

See our guide to UBS Arena event transportation.

MetLife Stadium

Location: One MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford, NJ 07073 Area: Meadowlands Capacity: 82,500

Iona Sprinter provides group transportation from New York City and Long Island to MetLife Stadium for Giants games, Jets games and stadium concerts.

With more than 80,000 attendees leaving at once, MetLife is the most staging-dependent venue in the region. Trying to find your ride at the curb after a stadium show is not a pickup plan.

Recommended pickup plan:

  • Where to meet: The stadium's designated drop-off and pick-up area for limousines, taxis and black cars is between Lots D and E, along the roadway. There is no charge to access it. Chauffeured vehicles can also enter the Sports Complex with a pre-paid parking permit for an additional fee — your provider arranges this in advance.
  • Timing strategy: Route 3, Route 120 and the roads around the Meadowlands complex back up heavily after games and concerts. Two strategies work: leave your seats a few minutes before the finale, or settle into the pickup area for 30–45 minutes and let the worst of it clear. Sitting in the queue on Route 120 is the worst of both worlds.
  • Route notes: Manhattan and Brooklyn groups return via the Lincoln Tunnel; Bronx and Westchester groups via the George Washington Bridge; Long Island groups via the Lincoln Tunnel, then the Queens–Midtown Tunnel and LIE.
  • Transit context: NJ Transit runs event trains from Meadowlands station to Secaucus Junction. It works for small groups, but not as well for 10 people with tailgating gear and merchandise.

Set your pickup plan before kickoff or before the concert begins. Everyone should know which lot they're walking to and who to call once the group is together.

Javits Center

Location: 429 11th Avenue (between W 34th and W 40th Streets), Manhattan's West Side Events: New York Comic Con, trade shows, conventions

With roughly 850,000 square feet of exhibit space, Javits conventions can mean long days, big crowds and plenty of things to carry. New York Comic Con alone draws more than 200,000 attendees over four days.

Conventions usually wind down in staggered waves rather than all at once, so Javits traffic tends to be more predictable than arena traffic. The exception is the busiest Comic Con days, when closing time can feel like a concert letting out.

Recommended pickup plan:

  • Best pickup block: 11th Avenue between W 34th and W 36th Streets, with wide curb space where a Sprinter can load. Use 11th Avenue & W 36th Street as your default corner.
  • Avoid: The Hudson Yards area and 10th Avenue below 34th Street at peak closing, where rideshare traffic backs up.
  • Timing strategy: Give your chauffeur the exhibit-hall closing time, then add 15 minutes for your group to collect bags and purchases. On the busiest convention days, double that.
  • Route notes: New Jersey-bound groups take the Lincoln Tunnel, which is close by; uptown groups use 12th Avenue and the West Side Highway.

For conventions, group transportation is most useful when attendees have bags, merchandise, costumes or equipment — exactly the things that turn a subway ride into a logistics problem.

If event access or entrance information changes, check your event or badge instructions before arrival.

How Does Post-Event Pickup Work?

A smooth return starts before the event.

1. Share the event details

When you book, provide the venue, event date, expected end time and your group's destinations.

2. Establish the pickup plan

Your transportation provider plans the pickup around the venue's traffic pattern: the exact corner, lot section or landmark from the venue guides above. Your group should know the meeting point before entering the event, and it should be specific enough to find in a crowd (a street corner, a lot row, a building, not "near the entrance").

3. Contact the chauffeur when you're ready

Once your group exits, go to the agreed pickup point and contact your chauffeur. Because chauffeured vehicles stage nearby rather than idle at the curb, expect the vehicle to pull in a few minutes after your call.

4. Leave together

Everyone boards the same vehicle and continues to the next destination or home.

For very large events, allow extra time to walk from the venue exit to the pickup area, and save the pickup corner as a screenshot before your battery and the venue's cell service start struggling.

7 Tips for Planning NYC Event Transportation

1. Choose one specific meeting point

Not "the side entrance," but a corner, a lot row or a building name. Don't leave the pickup location undecided until the event ends.

2. Save the pickup information

Take a screenshot of the meeting point and keep the chauffeur's contact information handy before entering the venue.

3. Leave early or leave late, never on the final whistle

The worst time to exit any major venue is the exact moment it ends. Leaving a few minutes early, or waiting 20–30 minutes inside, usually cuts both walking time and ride time.

4. Account for bags

If people are bringing luggage, equipment or costumes, or expect to buy merchandise, consider cargo space when choosing a vehicle.

5. Tell the provider about extra stops

If your itinerary includes dinner, hotel pickups or stops in another borough, include them when you book rather than adding them at the last minute.

6. Book once your plans are confirmed

Popular concerts, playoff games and major conventions create high demand for group transportation. Once you have your event date and approximate headcount, it's easier to secure the right vehicle.

7. Send the pickup and backup spots in one message

Each venue guide above has a main pickup point and a backup. Send both to your group in one message before the event. When thousands of people open their apps at once, data can slow down, but a message you already received and a screenshot still work.
