A Practical Race-Day Guide

If you're running the New York City Marathon on November 1, 2026, getting to the start deserves almost as much planning as your race-day breakfast.

This isn't a race where you just tell a driver to take you to the starting line. The marathon begins at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, thousands of runners are heading toward the same secured area, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge closes to traffic early in the morning.

Transportation is still manageable once you know what to expect.

Whether you're a runner staying in Manhattan, a family arriving through JFK, or a group trying to coordinate runners and spectators, here's how to plan your race weekend without making race morning harder than it needs to be.

IONA Sprinter runs sedans, SUVs, and Sprinter vans for runners, families, and groups throughout marathon weekend — airport transfers, hotel-to-terminal race-morning rides, spectator trips, and post-finish pickups. Book early, since same-day rides get unreliable once demand spikes and road closures set in. Tell us your hotel, party size, luggage, and runner wave when you book so timing lines up with your official NYRR transportation.

First: Know How the NYC Marathon Start Actually Works

The TCS New York City Marathon starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and runs 26.2 miles through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan before finishing in Central Park.

For most runners, the smartest way to reach the start is the transportation organized by New York Road Runners (NYRR).

For 2026, the main official options are the Staten Island Ferry, buses from Midtown Manhattan, and buses from New Jersey.

Runners select their transportation through their NYRR account during a set window. (For 2026, that window ran from August 25 to September 8.)

So where does a private car fit in? Usually before and after the official marathon transportation.

For example, we can pick you up at your hotel and take you to Whitehall Terminal for your assigned Staten Island Ferry, or to another departure point that matches your race-day plan. That takes one unpredictable trip off a morning when timing matters.

Can a Private Car Take You to the NYC Marathon Start?

Yes, but there's a catch.

Under NYRR's currently published 2026 guidance, runners using a private car, taxi, or rideshare can be dropped at McClean Avenue and Ocean Avenue on Staten Island. That's outside Fort Wadsworth, and you should expect roughly a half-mile walk toward the Start Villages.

There's no parking at the start.

More importantly, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is scheduled to close to traffic at 7:00 a.m. That makes a private ride to Staten Island very different from an ordinary point-to-point trip.

If you plan to use a private car service for the start, tell us your hotel, assigned wave, NYRR transportation selection, and target arrival time when you book. And always check the final NYRR instructions before race weekend — security procedures, access points, and traffic controls can change.

Staying in Manhattan? The Staten Island Ferry May Be Your Best Connection

For many runners staying in Manhattan, Whitehall Terminal is the key race-morning destination.

The Staten Island Ferry takes runners from Lower Manhattan to St. George Terminal, where marathon buses continue toward Fort Wadsworth. NYRR estimates the full journey at around 90 minutes.

This is where a pre-booked ride helps without trying to replace the official system. Instead of waking up and hoping to find a ride at 5 or 6 a.m., you can arrange an IONA Sprinter pickup from your Manhattan hotel straight to Whitehall Terminal, then continue on your assigned NYRR transportation.

Flying Into NYC for Marathon Weekend?

For out-of-town runners, transportation starts long before Sunday morning. JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark all serve marathon visitors, and traveling with race gear changes the airport-transfer math.

You may have a suitcase, running shoes you don't want to lose, nutrition, cold-weather layers, recovery gear, and family traveling with you.

We provide private airport transfers from JFK, LGA, and EWR to Manhattan and other New York destinations. A sedan works for a single runner or a couple. An SUV gives you more luggage room. For a running club, family, or larger group, a Sprinter van keeps everyone and their bags together instead of splitting across several cars.

The airport transfer is also a good time to lock in the rest of your weekend rather than improvising each trip.

Spectators Need a Transportation Plan Too

First-time visitors often underestimate this: following a runner around the city by car isn't realistic. The course itself becomes a major barrier to normal vehicle movement.

Road closures affect parts of all five boroughs, and crossing the route by car can turn a short trip on the map into a long one.

A better spectator plan is selective. Pick one or two viewing spots. Decide which side of the course you need to be on. Walk or take the subway where it makes sense, and use a car for the trips that stay practical around the closures.

If several family members are attending together, an hourly chauffeur or Sprinter can help for the parts of the day when vehicle access is open.

The goal isn't to chase the runner mile by mile. It's to be where you need to be without spending the day stuck in traffic.

Don't Plan a Central Park Curbside Pickup

Your runner crosses the finish line. Everyone celebrates. You open your phone and request a car right outside the finish.

That sounds convenient. On marathon Sunday, it isn't.

Central Park and the surrounding streets get extremely busy with finishers, spectators, security zones, and foot traffic. A curbside pickup right beside the finish shouldn't be your plan.

Instead, agree on a meeting point away from the most restricted area before race day. Give your runner enough time to move through the post-finish process, reconnect with family, and walk to the pickup spot. From there we can take your group back to the hotel, dinner, the airport, or wherever you're headed.

For someone who just ran 26.2 miles, knowing exactly where the ride will be is a small detail that suddenly matters a lot.

Traveling With a Running Club or Large Family?

This is where a Sprinter van really earns its place.

Picture six or eight people landing at JFK, checking into the same hotel, hitting the Expo, going out for dinner, and coordinating transportation all weekend. Booking three separate cars for every move gets messy fast.

A private Sprinter keeps the group together with room for luggage and race gear. IONA Sprinter offers group transportation for running clubs, families, corporate teams, coaches, and international marathon groups. You can also book different parts of the weekend rather than treating race morning as the only trip that matters.

A Smarter NYC Marathon Weekend Transportation Plan

A practical itinerary might look like this:

  • Friday or Saturday: Airport pickup at JFK, LGA, or EWR and a private transfer to your hotel.
  • Saturday: Transportation to the Expo, dining reservations, or other stops around the city.
  • Sunday morning: Early hotel pickup to your assigned NYRR transportation point — or a permitted private-vehicle drop-off if that's part of your confirmed plan.
  • During the race: Pre-planned spectator trips where road access allows.
  • After the race: Meet outside the controlled finish zone and take a prearranged car back to your hotel or celebration.
  • Monday: Airport transfer for the trip home.

Planning it this way beats opening a rideshare app every time someone needs to move.

Book NYC Marathon Transportation With IONA Sprinter

You already have enough to think about before the New York City Marathon: training, pacing, shoes, nutrition, weather, and the 26.2 miles themselves. Transportation shouldn't become another race.

IONA Sprinter provides private race-weekend transportation for runners, families, spectators, and groups — airport transfers, chauffeur service, SUVs, and Sprinter vans. Whether you need a ride from JFK to your Manhattan hotel, an early transfer to your official marathon transportation point, group transportation across the weekend, or a planned pickup after the race, we can set your itinerary in advance.

For race-day service, book early and share as much as you can — hotel, number of passengers, runner wave, luggage, and planned pickup times. Then check the final 2026 NYRR transportation instructions before race weekend.

Your job on November 1 is to run. Let us handle the miles before and after.

NYC Marathon Transportation FAQs

What's the best transportation for the NYC Marathon?

For a comfortable and well-planned NYC Marathon weekend, IONA Sprinter offers private chauffeur transportation for runners, families and groups. You can schedule a pickup from your hotel, airport or another location before heading to your assigned NYRR departure point. Sedans and SUVs are suitable for smaller groups, while Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans give larger groups room to travel together. On race day, your chauffeur can get you as close as permitted to your departure point, with a planned return pickup after the race.

Can a private car take me to Fort Wadsworth?

Not into the Start Village. Under the currently published NYRR guidance, the private car, taxi, and rideshare drop-off is McClean Avenue and Ocean Avenue on Staten Island, about a half-mile walk from the Start Villages.

What time does the Verrazzano Bridge close on marathon day?

NYRR currently states the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge closes to all traffic at 7:00 a.m. on race morning. Plan around this closure if you're considering a private ride to Staten Island.

Does IONA Sprinter provide NYC Marathon airport transportation?

Yes. We serve travelers arriving through JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, with sedans, SUVs, and Sprinter vans for different party sizes.

Is a Sprinter van suitable for a marathon group?

Yes. It's especially useful for running clubs, families, and groups traveling with luggage and race gear, since everyone travels together instead of coordinating multiple cars.

Should I book NYC Marathon transportation in advance?

Yes. Marathon weekend brings unusually high demand and heavy traffic restrictions across the city. Booking ahead also gives you time to coordinate pickups around official transportation and road-access rules.
